How To Get Started In It Support?
hi
I’ve been rejected by literally 100 job applications now (recently completed a degree in computer studies at college) and getting real depressed about it. I would like to begin with an entry level role such as in IT Support however I have found places are fussy about relevant experience in troubleshooting and providing computer support to other people which I dont have. I was hoping some places would offer training but none seem to do that.
Without spending thousands on relevant certification courses what can I do to ensure my next application to an IT Support role is successful?
Thanks
CompTIAs A+ certification would help you out a lot. It won’t cost thousands. You can self study and just buy a book or two plus the cost of the exam. The knowledge you’ll gain from learning the material and passing the exam will put you in a good position for entry level tech support opportunities. You have to gain some hands on experience troubleshooting, repairing, and upgrading computers. Put the word out to friends and family that you’ll do FREE tech support while you are learning. Check out http://www.comptia.org for more information about the A+. I wrote an article about how to self study for the A+ certification. The info in the article will help you out even if you don’t go the cert route but just want to bone up on your computer skills.

I worked in the tech industry for 10 years and was a tech support manager for 5 yrs. From experience I can tell you that having A+ on your resume will open some doors. In addition to A+, also take a look at CompTIA’s Network+ – another good starting point for an IT career. Microsoft’s MCSE certification accepts A+ with Network+ towards completion of their cert.
In the IT world you get out of it what you put into it. You have to be constantly improving your knowledge and sharpening your skills if you want to succeed. Don’t get depressed. Just recognize that you have more work to do to get where you want to be and create a plan to accomplish your goals.
Congratulations on your recent graduation from college! That_IS_something to be proud of. Good luck!
