Are There Significant Differences Between The Fans Of The Different London Football Teams?

February 7th, 2010 admin Leave a comment Go to comments

I am an American who is growing interested in the Premiership, and am trying to figure out which London team to support (has to be London–it’s the only city in the UK I have ever visited). In the U.S., there are some fundamental differences between Dodgers and Angels fans, Cubs and White Sox fans, and Yankees and Mets fans. The differences come from the areas in which the fans live and from the identity of the teams themselves. So, what, if any, are the differences between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham fans, between Arsenal and West Ham fans, and so on? I am not interested in supporting Chelsea just because they are on top, but could support them if I could relate to their fans and team’s identity. Hence my question…thx!

As with the teams in the states, most fans support a local team. Therefore Spurs fans generally come from Tottenham, Fulham for Fulham etc (these places are suburbs of London). However there is intense rivallry between certain teams, ie Arsenal and Spurs… and everyone hates Chelsea! An exception to the local fan base rule would be with Manchester United, as very few of their fans actually live in Manchester. Most Mancunians support Manchester City. West Ham is a very family-orientated team, and has very loyal supporters. I’m a Liverpool fan, but the one London team I’m always pleased to see do well is West Ham.
